In Loving Memory

Sonflowers (and daughterflowers)

In my heart sunflowers grow there
their seeds planted with love and tenderness
their roots watered by the tears that flow there
their warm faces turned toward heaven's caress
their leaves stroked by the breezes that blow there

I've asked God to touch me with His bold hand
to bless me and my garden in His power
to keep my flowers safe from death's cold hand
to make it possible for just one flower
to sprout and to grow and to touch me with its gold hand

I've prayed for the sun to shine in my life here
and tended this garden without any success
and the pain and the sadness cuts like a knife here
and the loss overwhelms me to excess
and its taken its toll on this childless wife here
